Floating glass density meter, 12.5 cm long, brand Le Pratique.
Easy to use, this densimeter allows to measure the density of a sweet solution, like a syrup, a beer, a jam, a sorbet, a fruit juice or a jelly.
Measuring range from 1.100 to 1.400 g/ml or from 15° to 40° Bé (degree Baumé). A good consistency jam is found at 1.2964 g/ml.
Use:
Carefully place the densimeter into the sugar solution, bottom bulb first. Turn the densimeter on itself to remove any air bubbles and let it float. It should be vertical and not stick to the sides. Once stabilized, a meniscus will be on the surface of the liquid. The measurement is made by observing the scale under the meniscus.
Always use the densimeter in a solution at room temperature to avoid thermal shock. Never use the densimeter directly in the hot solution to avoid breakage. Simply take a sufficient quantity in another container to make the measurement.
